Becoming Instruments of Peace in the Year of St Francis of Assisi

The Catholic Diocese of Ahiara has recently unveiled a series of programs to celebrate the Year of St Francis of Assisi, following its official inauguration by the Bishop on Sunday, April 26, 2026. This special year offers the faithful a unique opportunity for spiritual growth, reconciliation, deeper faith, and renewed commitment to the Gospel and ecological stewardship.

Most Rev. Dr. Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, CMF, initiated this local observance in alignment with the proclamation of the Jubilee year of St. Francis of Assisi by Pope Leo XIV, which spans from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027, marking the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi. This jubilee year emphasizes the themes of forgiveness, mercy, and ecological care, as highlighted by the Holy Father, and serves as a time of spiritual renewal, peace, and reconciliation, allowing the faithful to obtain a plenary indulgence and venerate the saint’s relics.

More than just a historical commemoration, this year is fashioned to be a season of genuine transformation. It aims to foster a more united, prayerful, and compassionate church, committed to being an instrument of Christ’s peace.

In his pastoral message, Called to be Agents and Witnesses of Peace in the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara in the Spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, Bishop Nwobi challenges the faithful to become authentic instruments of peace in a world increasingly marked by conflict, division, fear, and uncertainty. This message is both timely and prophetic. At a period when communities and nations continue to grapple with violence, mistrust, and social fragmentation, the example of St. Francis compels the faithful to reject pride, resentment, rivalry, and self-seeking tendencies. In our homes, the bishop advocates forgiveness and understanding. In our parishes and institutions, he encourages collaboration, dialogue, and unity. In society, he urges the promotion of truth, justice, and compassion without recourse to violence.

Of immense importance is the Franciscan simplicity. In a culture often driven by materialism and the pursuit of status, St. Francis reminds Christians that authentic joy is found not in possessions but in a deep relationship with God and generous service to others. This witnessing remains as relevant today as it was eight centuries ago. These are practical expressions of the Franciscan spirit that the diocesan programs throughout the year will continually promote. These programs provide an opportunity for the clergy, religious, and lay faithful to rediscover the Franciscan spirit and to translate its values into concrete actions within families, parishes, institutions, and society at large.

The success of the year of St. Francis will not be measured solely by the number of activities organized or events attended. Its true fruit will be seen in transformed hearts and renewed communities, ones that embrace peace. Such peace begins with personal conversion and extends outward to families, workplaces, parishes, and society.

May St. Francis of Assisi accompany Ahiara Diocese throughout this special year, and may the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for all the faithful as they strive to become instruments of peace.
