On Monday, June 22, 2026, the family, friends, and the entire Lude community gathered at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Lude Ahiara, for the month’s mind of Rev. Fr. Martinianus Chidi Chileke, whose death occurred on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the age of 54.
The memorial mass was presided over by Rev. Fr. Franklyn Odoegbulem and concelebrated by a great number of other priests. Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr. Ephraim Ibekwe noted that one month had passed since the death of Fr. Chileke, and the community is now facing the reality of his absence. Drawing from the meaning of his name, “Chidi,” which means “God exists,” the homilist urged the faithful to remember that God’s presence endures in every situation of life, especially in moments of loss. Fr. Ibekwe highlighted Fr. Chileke’s personal witness, saying the deceased priest demonstrated steadfast faith throughout his life. Like Daniel in the lion’s den, Fr. Chidi carried the burden of illness with patience and trust in God.
The homilist added that, following Christ’s example of suffering and loneliness, Fr. Chileke showed the faithful how to endure hardship with hope. He encouraged everyone present to learn from him by carrying their own cross with faith, trusting that the God who promised to be with us until the end of time will never abandon us.
Born on April 15, 1972, Fr. Chileke was ordained a priest on August 7, 1999. For more than 26 years, he dedicated his life to the service of God’s people until death. Witnesses describe him as a priest whose ministry was marked by selfless service and deep compassion.
Until his death, Fr. Martinianus Chidi Chileke was resident at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Umuokrika Ekwerazu.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.
