Scholar, philanthropist, community leader, author, and politician Dr. Nnamdi Ejekwumadu, widely known as Udongalasi, has expressed great thanks as one of the awardees of the 2026 Ahiara Diocesan Catholic Women Organization’s August meeting held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Nazareth Home, Lude, Ahiara.
The award ceremony, which formed part of the event, witnessed the recognition of distinguished individuals who have made positive contributions to the growth of the church and society.
Dr. Nnamdi Ejekwumadu, one of the recipients of the awards, while interfacing with our correspondent, expressed gratitude to the mothers for the recognition and honor. He equally saw it as an encouragement to do more in community development and humanitarian services. “I am grateful; I am humbled. This recognition is an encouragement to continue to support initiatives that promote faith, unity, and the welfare of the community. It is a source of strength for me, and I pledge my relentless effort towards community development and the growth of the Church for the good of the Church in Ahiara,” Dr. Ejekwumadu stated.
Dr. Ejekwumadu, who is known for his commitment towards community development, church growth, youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and visionary leadership, received the “Ugo CWO Ahiara Diocese” Award.
Born on July 14, 1980, Dr. Ejekwumadu is a twin and the sixth child of the late Jude Ejekwu and Theresa Onyike of Amakpaka Nnarambia. Raised in a family deeply rooted in faith, education, and service, he has built a career that spans academia, banking, healthcare, industry, public administration, and politics, serving in leadership capacities within Nigeria and internationally, including Uganda and the United Kingdom.
His leadership journey began early. From serving as school monitor and library prefect to occupying student leadership positions at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and later serving as a peer educator-trainer during the National Youth Service Corps, he consistently demonstrated a commitment to service before going on to hold strategic political and administrative appointments in Imo State and within the People’s Democratic Party.
Throughout his academic and professional life, excellence has remained a defining characteristic. His numerous distinctions include First Prize in the Imo State Science Competition for Secondary Schools (1993); First Prize in the Fanta Club Essay Competition (1996); runner-up in the IBC Quiz Competition (1996); participation in the Princeton University Drama and Poetry Competition, New Jersey (1997); and First Prize in the Ahiara Diocese Block Rosary Quiz Competition (1998), the Mobil University Scholarship Award (1999-2004), the NYSC State Honours Award in Zamfara State (2005/2006), and the Nigeria Youth Leadership Award (2008).
Dr. Ejekwumadu began his educational journey at St. Brigid’s Nursery School, Ahiara, in 1984, before attending Ahiazu Secondary School, Lude. He later earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Biochemistry from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, followed by both a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy in Biotechnology from Teesside University, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom. His academic development has been further enriched by advanced professional studies at the United Nations University, Japan, and the University of Oxford.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Dr. Ejekwumadu has established himself as a respected author and public intellectual. His publications, Unmasking The Hebrews of West Africa (2008) and Philosophical Foundations of Igbo Numerology: An Ancient Recipe for Modern Leadership in Africa (2011), have contributed to contemporary discussions on African identity, leadership and cultural heritage. He is also completing another work, Child of St. Brigid, which is expected to articulate his philosophy of leadership and vision for future generations.
One of his most enduring contributions remains the establishment of the Udongalasi Foundation in 2005 during the centenary commemoration of the historic Ahiara-British War of 1905, popularly known as Ọgụ Udongalasi. For more than two decades, the foundation has championed good governance, youth development, historical consciousness, cultural preservation, and community advancement.
His commitment to preserving the heritage of the Mbaise people is further reflected in his proposal for the establishment of the Mbaise Heritage Museum and Library, an initiative conceived to safeguard the region’s history, traditions, and cultural identity for generations to come.

In the sphere of economic development, Dr. Ejekwumadu has continued to advocate practical responses to youth unemployment through his proposed Mbaise Industrial Cluster Project, a comprehensive development initiative projected to generate approximately 5,000 jobs. Modeled on successful public-private partnership frameworks in India, Southeast Asia, and the United Kingdom, the proposal reflects his enduring commitment to sustainable economic growth and youth empowerment.
Speakers at the event described him as a visionary whose influence transcends politics and public office, commending his sustained investments in education, humanitarian service, cultural renaissance, and the development of young people. They observed that his initiatives have transformed lives and strengthened communities across Mbaise and beyond.
Presenting the award, the leadership of the Catholic Women’s Organization stated that Dr. Ejekwumadu’s life embodies the virtues of faith, humility, excellence, selfless service, and commitment to the common good. According to the organization, the honor celebrates not only a distinguished record of achievement but also a legacy capable of inspiring a new generation of leaders dedicated to integrity, service, and nation-building. Other awardees expressed appreciation to the Diocesan CWO. They commended them for organizing the event and for their continued dedication in the Church.
The 2026 Ahiara Diocesan CWO August meeting held was attended by clergy, religious, traditional, and community leaders; public officials; and guests from within and beyond Mbaise. The gathering was held with the support of the Catholic Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Most Rev. Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, CMF, under the leadership of the Diocesan CWO President, Prof. Oby Angel Nnamocha.
