Today, Christians in Nigeria join millions of the faithful across the globe in celebrating Easter Sunday, the solemnity of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This celebration represents the cornerstone of Christian faith and symbolizes hope over despair, life over death, and light over darkness.
From many corners of the nation, churches are filled to the brim with the faithful adorned in glowing attire, echoing the joy of the risen Christ and in thanksgiving to God, who has given us hope in his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
In reflecting on the significance of Easter, the Catholic Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, CMF, characterized this period as an opportunity to celebrate Christ’s resurrection, hope, and peace. The prelate emphasized that at Easter, “We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus our Lord, who triumphed over death and assured us through His resurrection that death is not the end but that life continues after death. Easter symbolizes victory over sin, death, and injustice. It offers an opportunity for the renewal of our faith. Amidst the daunting challenges in the world and especially in Nigeria today, we have every reason to celebrate.”
Easter is one of the most widely celebrated events in the Christian calendar, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ and serving as a profound reminder of hope, renewal, and the triumph of life over death. While deeply rooted in Christian tradition, it carries with it many promises and manifestations of God’s power. At Easter, we celebrate the culmination and fulfillment of God’s promise and His power over sin and death. The message of Easter transcends religious boundaries, offering a universal theme of new beginnings that can inspire individuals and communities alike.
Notably, Easter brings promises of unwavering hope, for the resurrection of Christ is the true hope of the world—the hope that does not disappoint. At the heart of Easter lies a poignant symbol that illustrates how despair can transform into hope, even in the bleakest of circumstances. It encourages us to embrace the belief that, no matter the challenges we face, new beginnings are always possible.
For many faithful, Easter revitalizes opportunities for families to gather, share meals, exchange pleasantries, and extend charity to the less privileged, embodying the communal spirit of the season. Some parishes organize food support apostolates to assist those in need within their communities.
While this year’s celebration is marked by many Nigerians continuing to grapple with economic hardship, insecurity, and social and political tensions, the message of Easter continues to resonate with hope and renewal.
During conversations with the faithful of the diocese on the Easter celebration, many Catholics, while acknowledging the hard times facing the nation, expressed a sense of hope. They shared sentiments highlighting that in the furrows of our nation’s history, decked with so many acts of injustice and violence, the call to rise, which is celebrated at Easter, becomes pertinent.
“In the light of the numerous challenges confronting Nigeria, we are encouraged to remain hopeful amidst all odds. While denouncing the persistent injustices, corruption in high places, insecurity, killing of innocent people, and the economic instability that has caused the skyrocketing of the prices of goods and commodities, even affecting the transportation sector, with little or no effort by the government to curb the situation, this Easter urges us towards a thoughtful reflection and a united journey in anticipation of divine intervention,” stated one of the faithful.
As the sun rises on this Easter morning, the message remains clear: the empty tomb is not just a symbol but a promise of the third day. On the third day, God raised Jesus from the dead. He lifted him high above the heavens. The third day is the day to rejoice, the day of peace and fulfillment. In our various individual and social problems, Easter reminds us never to forget the third day—a day of God’s power and a day God declares forcefully that the devil and his agents can never have the last word on God’s people.
Indeed, for Nigeria and the world, Easter brings forth hope as a timeless truth that consoles and inspires us. In the face of our myriad challenges and struggles, Easter reminds us that we, too, can rise anew, shedding the burdens of the past and embracing the promise of brighter days ahead.
