South African Bishop Visits Ahiara Diocese

Bishop Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, CMF, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara, received Bishop Victor Phalana of the Diocese of Klerksdorp, South Africa, on a courtesy visit to the diocesan Chancery.

Bishop Phalana was in Mbaise, Imo State, for the funeral of a brother to Fr. Ignatius Okoroji, SDV, and, while in the area, paid a fraternal visit to the Bishop of Ahiara.

During the encounter, both prelates shared cordial fraternal moments with the younger priests of Ahiara Diocese, who were concurrently engaged in their ongoing formation seminar at the Chancery.

In his brief remarks, Bishop Phalana expressed satisfaction with the warmth of his reception and the enriching experiences his short stay in the diocese had afforded him. He recalled with evident fondness an earlier brief stay in Awka, Anambra State, where he developed an appreciation for Nigerian cuisine.

He further reflected that such nice experiences, now remembered with nostalgia, ought to be the story of any African in South Africa, rather than the recurring xenophobic tensions that have recently re-emerged in some parts of the country. He noted with emphasis that “this is not what we as a people are known for.” He urged authorities to ensure the protection and dignity of all persons, migrants and citizens alike, as members of one human family.

The visiting bishop also commended the priests, religious, and faithful of Ahiara Diocese for their patience during the protracted crisis that rocked the diocese, noting that he had followed developments closely and had consistently accompanied the diocese in prayer. With the resolution of the situation and the appointment of a new bishop, he expressed confidence in a brighter future for the diocese.

He further expressed appreciation for the presence of Nigerian priests in his own diocese, describing them as dedicated, industrious, and a valuable pastoral asset.

In response, the Chancellor of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Evaristus Mbata, speaking on behalf of all present, conveyed heartfelt gratitude for the Bishop’s fraternal visit, which greatly enriched the ongoing seminar, as well as for his sustained spiritual solidarity throughout the period of unrest. He also thanked Bishop Nwobi for his gracious hospitality to our distinguished guest.

At the conclusion of the encounter, Bishop Phalana prayed for all present and the Diocese and imparted his blessing.
