KSJI Bids Farewell to Centenarian Knight, Noble Sir Adolphus Achilonu

By Peace Chidindu

The Knights of St. John International (KSJI) and the faithful of St Jude’s Catholic Church, Amuzi, Ahiazu Mbaise, on Saturday gathered in solemn communion of prayer to commend to God the soul of Sir Adolphus David Olewike Achilonu, who passed on at the age of 104, after a long life marked by fidelity to the Church and service to the community.

The funeral Mass, celebrated at St. Jude’s Parish, was presided over by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Clement Okoro, who, in his homily, gave testimony to the enduring faith of the deceased, noting that even in advanced age he remained steadfast in his devotion to the Church, generous in support of its mission, and consistent in his participation in ecclesial life.

Fr. Okoro reflected on Sir Achilonu’s life as one shaped by quiet but resolute commitment, particularly in his membership of KSJI and his active involvement in parish development. He encouraged the faithful, especially the younger generation, to learn from such a witness of Christian life, where faith is expressed not only in words but also in sustained acts of service and generosity, and he commended the bereaved family to the consolation of divine mercy.

In a tribute, Mr. Ali Achilonu (rtd.), former Assistant Controller-General of Immigration and first son of the deceased, described his father as “a school of humility,” recalling a life lived in pursuit of peace, reconciliation, and concern for the good of others. He noted that the deceased consistently sought harmony within family and community, and that his disposition toward others reflected a deep interior discipline shaped by Christian values.

He further recounted the late Achilonu’s contribution to community development, particularly the facilitation of electricity and water in Umuokisi, describing it as part of a wider pattern of service that defined his public engagement. According to him, the deceased retired as a headmaster in special class after a distinguished career in education, during which he also served the Church as catechist, station council chairman, and lay leader in various capacities, including assignments in northern Nigeria.

The KSJI and the wider faithful commended his life as one that was characterized by steadfast service to the Church, dedication to Christian education, and enduring commitment to the upliftment of society. The funeral rites concluded with prayers for the eternal rest of his soul, in the hope of the resurrection promised to the faithful in Christ.

May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
